UPDATE: Suspect arrested on murder charge after Monday night shooting

The Amarillo Police Department's Homicide Unit is investigating a man's death after officers heard gunfire in Amarillo on Monday night.

Police said late Tuesday that the suspect, identified as Joseph Patrick Smith, 21, faces a murder charge and was booked into the Potter County Detention Center. Amarillo homicide detectives are still investigating the incident.

As previously reported, at about 10 p.m. Monday, Amarillo officers heard shots fired near the area of Southwest 2nd and South Tyler Street, police said. When they arrived, officers found a man who had died from an apparent gunshot wound. He was identified as Leroy Wells, 38.
