Altercation at children’s game at AA Comeaux Park strikes fear into residents

ABBEVILLE, La. (KLFY)– A Wednesday incident at AA Comeaux Parks & Recreation during a Quality Sports Authority baseball game for 8-year-olds struck fear and panic into many parents and children in attendance.

Many community members took to social media to express disapproval, safety concerns, and calls for the people responsible to be held accountable; some witnesses at the game said it was terrifying. News 10 was told a woman threatened gun violence and called additional people to join her in physically assaulting other people at the game. News 10 learned no one was injured but verbal threats were made. Witnesses said it all started because a parent was offended by what another parent said during their child’s game. One woman described the scene where children were terrorized. Parents were lying over their children and others were hiding in the dugout and woods.

Mayor Rosyln White released a statement when she was made aware of the incident saying, “I do believe that any adult who behaves this way over a youth baseball game should be held accountable for their inappropriate and dangerous actions.”

She said she notified Chief Mike Hardy and the recreation managers that all individuals involved in the incident were not to be allowed back on the property until further notice.

She adds, “I understand that our community is still suffering from the recent traumatic incident at [St. Mary Magdalen Catholic ] church and tonight caused additional panic. This is understandable given the recent event in our community. I do not take this incident lightly and I will not tolerate anyone who causes harm or instigates fear or hate in our community.”

Abbeville Police Department also released a statement addressing the incident on social media saying, “To the citizens of Abbeville and members of other communities who were present for the incident at the baseball field at A.A. Comeaux Park last night, we would like to apologize to everyone who had to experience this horrific behavior.”

They assure everyone that the incident is being rigorously and comprehensively investigated. The behavior that occurred at a public event, much less a children’s sporting event, is inexcusable.

Officers have been collecting video footage, photographs and statements to properly obtain warrants so that the police department can charge all parties involved to the fullest extent of the law and subsequently arrest them.

Anyone who is a victim or witnessed this incident come forward and provide a written statement so that all charges can move forward. Anyone with video footage or pictures is encouraged to send them to the police department. The woman accused of threatening violence told News 10 she is willing to speak with us and share her perspective.
