ANNAPOLIS, Md. (DC News Now) – Angela Alsobrooks defeated fellow Democrat David Trone in the primary race for U.S. Senate Tuesday, according to a projection from Decision Desk HQ and one from the Associated Press.

The Prince George’s County executive and U.S. representative, respectively, hoped to fill the seat held by Democrat Ben Cardin, who said in 2023 that he would retire from the U.S. Senate at the end of his third term.

The results of an Emerson College Polling/DC News Now/The Hill survey released on May 9 showed that 42% of voters supported Alsobrooks in the Democratic Primary, while 41% said they would choose Trone. Alsobrooks will face Larry Hogan in November after the former Maryland governor won the Republican U.S. Senate Primary on Tuesday.

Cardin issued a statement following Alsobrooks’ victory Tuesday:

“Congratulations to Angela Alsobrooks, who will be the next senator from Maryland. She will make the difference in keeping a Democratic majority in the Senate and restoring reproductive rights,” said U.S. Senator Ben Cardin. “Both Angela Alsobrooks and David Trone ran strong campaigns that upheld Democratic values. I am confident that Marylanders will come together now to protect women’s rights, increase public safety, and maintain a Democratic majority that will hold the line against Republican extremists. A vote for any Republican candidate for senator is a vote for a Republican-controlled Senate, and the country cannot afford for that to happen. Let’s do this!”

Gov. Wes Moore, who appeared on the campaign trail with Alsobrooks, as well as in her politcal advertising, also provided a statement that said, in part: ““I’ve been so proud to be on Angela Alsobrooks’ team since day one because I know she is the leader we need in this moment,” said Maryland Governor Wes Moore. “During her time as State’s Attorney Prince George’s County saw a 50% reduction in violent crime, they built 10 news schools, and we brought the new FBI Headquarters to her county—those are the real results we can expect to see when she becomes Maryland’s next Senator.”

Around 10:45 p.m., Trone addressed people at his watch party, letting them know that he talked to Alsobrooks, wishing her the best of luck, and offering his support.

“We’ve got to hold the Senate,” Trone told the crowd. “We cannot let the party of Trump take our Senate.”

It was after 11 p.m. that Alsobrooks took to the stage to cheers of her supporters to give her victory speech.

The same Emerson College Polling/DC News Now/The Hill poll that showed Alsobrooks ahead of Trone looked at the potential matchup between her and Hogan in November. The results showed Alsobrooks leading Hogan, 48% to 38%, with 14% undecided.
