The late Carol Ogline of Alliance was celebrated April 26 during the City of Alliance’s Shade Tree Commission’s annual Arbor Day event.

Ogline, a longtime community leader in the Carnation City, died Dec. 12, 2023, at age 99. She was honored for a lifetime of “working to make Alliance a better place.”

Ogline, a Mount Union College graduate, taught kindergarten at Rockhill School and started the Adopt-a-Reader program to assist at-risk students during the summertime. She also participated in Carnation City Players productions. She was a longtime member of Christ United Methodist Church, YWCA of Alliance, Coterie and Hill & Dale Gardeners. She became active in Habitat for Humanity, and accompanied Jimmy and Rosalyn Carter to Hungary to build Habitat houses.

A Shangri La Ginkgo tree was planted on Mount Union’s campus at the location of the former TriDelt House.  Shade Tree Commissioner Leigh Mainwaring introduced Mayor Andy Grove, who read a proclamation for Ogline and Arbor Day.

Arbor Day ceremonies are a requirement to maintain Tree City USA status. Alliance has been awarded Tree City USA status for 42 consecutive years.
