Alleghany High School 2024 graduation ceremony moved to Casey Field

ALLEGHANY COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — For the first time ever, the Alleghany High School (AHS) graduation ceremony will be held at Casey Field in Covington.

Students are set to walk across the stage on June 1 at 10 a.m. The Alleghany Highlands Public School (AHPS) district says the ceremony was moved due to ongoing projects at the high school. This includes a new roof at AHS and the Jackson River Technical Center, and construction of a new track at Mountaineer Field during June.

“We are especially excited to celebrate the Class of 2024’s commencement. Our decision to host this landmark event at Casey Field was made with our families in mind, aiming to maximize the opportunity for loved ones to witness this moment in their student’s life,” said AHS Principal Derek Cantrell.

The Class of 2024, is also the first set of graduates from the newly combined Alleghany High School. AHS became a joint high school for Alleghany Highlands Public School last fall.

AHPS was created in July 2022 when Alleghany County Public Schools, Covington City Public Schools, and Jackson River Technical Center joined forces. The school serves approximately 2,700 students and is jointly funded by Alleghany County and the City of Covington.

“This ceremony is not just a first for our graduates, but also a historic moment as the inaugural commencement for the newly consolidated Alleghany High School. We look forward to sharing this special day with our students and their families,” Cantrell said.
