Alison Sudol’s ‘The Story of Pines’: Animated Short Spreads Green Message

The Story of Pines, an animated short film cowritten by Alison Sudol of A Fine Frenzy, premieres today, October 2, on TakePart TV. It is a companion piece to Pines, Sudol’s third full-length studio album, which will be released on October 9. Preorder the songs in the film from the album Pines now on iTunes.

In the 16-minute short, a tree named Pine learns that her forest has been laid to waste. She then meets a bird named Bird, and the two embark on an adventure in search of “then”—a new forest home.

Last week, in an exclusive interview with TakePart, Sudol explained the importance of the natural world in her creative process. “Things that I can’t gain perspective on in my own life suddenly make sense out there in the woods. And then there’s also just the sense of calm I get from being in un-peopled surroundings.”

In the spirit of the film, TakePart has created a tree planting campaign—and we need your help to get it started. Be one of the first 10,000 people to text PINES to 71777 (through October 16), and the National Arbor Day Foundation will plant a tree. It’s as simple as that.
