After the goddess Alicia Keys went totally makeup-free at the VMAs (and totally blew everyone away), she sparked a pretty intense debate about makeup in general. Despite the fact that the singer had already penned a beautifully inspiring message about her very personal decision in May for Lena Dunham’s feminist newsletter, Lenny, she decided to send a short and sweet message to her followers.

She emphasized that her decision is purely personal, and that every person can and should make their own decisions about what they put on (or take off) their skin.

Of course, many people were so inspired by the singer’s personal choices that they’ve decided to proudly make the same decision.

Alicia’s stunning skin has people wanting to know how to get that same healthy, natural glow.

In her Lenny Letter, Alicia talks about how her #nomakeup movement started almost by accident thanks to a serendipitous meeting with a photographer. After some raw portraits were taken, she started to feel more herself than ever.

She writes, “I felt powerful because my initial intentions realized themselves. My desire to listen to myself, to tear down the walls I built over all those years, to be full of purpose, and to be myself!”

And her empowerment through being makeup-free is obviously resonating and inspiring women everywhere.

It’s wonderful that Alicia took time to make sure people know her decision is simply a personal one and that she completely supports whatever makes you feel the most beautiful. For some people, that can mean totally dolling yourself up and there is nothing wrong with that.
