Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Asks at ‘What Point Is Fox News Obligated to Not Lie?’ About Shutdown
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez went after Fox News on Thursday over coverage of her during the government shutdown and bluntly asked what the network’s obligation was to tell the truth.
“As I say *in the clip you posted* we WENT to the majority leader’s office – he was absent. So we decided to drop letters off at almost every place he could run (including the GOP break room),” she tweeted. “At what point is @FoxNews obligated to not lie? And more importantly, #WheresMitch?”
The matter at hand concerned coverage of Ocasio-Cortez’s attempt to find Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and demand to him in person that he consider legislation passed by the House of Representatives to reopen the government. McConnell has said he would not bring any bill to reopen the government to the floor that President Trump would veto.

In Fox News’ reporting, Peter Doocy told viewers that Ocasio-Cortez and others had been looking for McConnell in the wrong place.
“They couldn’t find him because those lawmakers went to the wrong office,” Doocy said. “McConnell works out of the Majority Leader’s space in the capitol, which the lawmakers would have needed to pass on their way to the Senate side to try and make their point.”
“McConnell’s folks say they had no advance notice that House Democrats were coming to say ‘hi’ anyway,” he added.

For Ocasio-Cortez, the moment was a one-two punch, allowing her to take a shot at Fox News while also promoting her hashtag “#WheresMitch” to try and muscle Republicans into reopening the government.
In a statement, Doocy defended his reporting.
“In an earlier segment today, I played a clip of Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez saying in her own words that she had been looking for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, recorded at McConnell’s Russell office,” he said. “I then stated after the clip that they went to the wrong place, simply meaning that he wasn’t there at the time nor was he in any of the places they outlined in the clip that we played. They didn’t have anything set up with McConnell’s team, which is why they couldn’t locate him and what I was ultimately trying to explain to our viewers.”

The shutdown, now the longest in U.S. history, continues to remain deadlocked over funding for President Trump’s proposed wall along the Mexican border. The billionaire has demanded roughly $5 billion for the long promised barrier, while House Democrats have refused. The chamber’s new speaker, Nancy Pelosi, has vowed to block the project and has called the wall an “immorality.”
