Alexa Marrero, Majority Deputy Staff Director

Alexa Marrero blends her former gig as the committee’s communications director with that of her more strategic role as deputy staff director, a position she took on in July 2012.

“It’s an interesting mix of strategic and operational while still communicating with the outside,” Marrero, 32, said in an interview.

Marrero served as press secretary for the House Education and the Workforce Committee under then-Chairman John Boehner, R-Ohio. After a short stint as vice president of communications and industry relations for the nonprofit Education Finance Council, Marrero was drawn back to the Hill in 2007 when she rejoined the Education Committee.

Marrero grew up in Shoreview, Minn., and met her future husband in high school; they have been married for 10 years. While Marrero had a heavy workload as communications director, her days have only gotten busier in her new role. We asked her what she does with her free time. “What’s free time?” she said with a laugh.
