Ahead of the 2015 Universal Exposition, which takes place from May 1 to October 31 in Milan, Alessi has released a series of figurines honoring some of the best known culinary specialties of Italian cities.
The "Souvenirs d'Italie" collection includes five hand-decorated porcelain statuettes, each honoring a particular Italian city.
The Venetian figure wears a blue gown and a matching carnival mask, along with a boat-shaped hat and a crown of two fish. More down-to-earth, the Bolognese figure wears a big smile and brandishes chunks of her hometown's famous mortadella with pride.
The Neapolitan figure, resembling the commedia dell'arte clown Punchinello, is sitting down to a pizza. The Calabrese figure, representing the city of Catanzaro, is an ode to hot peppers. Finally, the Sicilian figure, honoring Palermo, carries a basket of the region's signature fruits: lemons, grapes and prickly pears. The price of these figures is available on request.
Figures inspired by other Italian cities will be added to the collection in the future.
In another special limited edition for Expo Milano, Alessi offers a new take on its famous corkscrew designed by Alessandro Mendini. The anthropomorphic utensil wears a miniature replica of the Milan Cathedral on his head and an apron with the words Milano 2015.
