Aldon Smith turns himself into police on domestic violence charges

Aldon Smith, who has derailed a promising NFL career with bad decisions and terrible off-field issues, has turned himself into San Francisco police on domestic violence charges.

ESPN reported Smith turned himself in Tuesday at 3:25 p.m. Eastern on charges of willful infliction of corporal injury, assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury, false imprisonment and vandalism (less than $400). He’s being held for $30,000 bond.

Smith was once one of the best players in football. He had 19.5 sacks for the San Francisco 49ers in 2012 and was named to the All-Pro team. Smith has played in just 27 games since due to various off-field issues and suspensions, and has missed each of the last two seasons due to suspension. The Oakland Raiders cut Smith after his latest incident, it doesn’t seem like the NFL has any reason to reinstate him and it wouldn’t be surprising if Smith never played in the NFL again.

According to KTVU in San Francisco, someone called 911 last Saturday night to report a domestic violence incident involving Smith, who allegedly fled the premises. KTVU said the dispatch call by police stated the “suspect threw her around the room, bit her on the wrist and climbed out the window.”

The Raiders had been patient with Smith, but didn’t wait long to cut Smith after that report. We’ve seen talented pass rushers get plenty of chances despite troubles off the field, and Smith is just 28 years old, but he bigger concerns than his football career at the moment.
