Aldi recalls Happy Farms cream cheese spread products for potential salmonella

Check your refrigerator if you shop at Aldi and buy cream cheese spread products.

The nationwide grocer is voluntarily recalling several varieties of its Happy Farms brand of cream cheese spreads due to concerns about the potential for salmonella, according to a notice on Aldi's website.

The cream cheese products were sold at Aldi stores in 30 states, including Michigan.

Aldi issued the recall of Happy Farms cream cheese spreads "out of an abundance of caution" and in cooperation with Schreiber Foods Inc. The recalled Happy Farms varieties are Whipped Cream Cheese Spread, Chive & Onion Cream Cheese Spread, Cream Cheese Spread, and Strawberry Cream Cheese Spread.

The products listed on Aldi's website have specific UPC codes and various August and September sell-by dates.

Salmonella is a bacteria that can cause severe infections in those with weakened immune systems, children younger than 5, and adults older than 65. Symptoms for healthy people include diarrhea (which may be bloody), fever, and abdominal cramps. Symptoms can start six hours to six days after being infected and last four to seven days, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

If you have severe salmonella symptoms, contact your healthcare provider.The CDC estimates that salmonella bacteria cause more than 1 million infections, 26,500 hospitalizations, and 420 deaths in the U.S. annually, and most illnesses come from food.
