Aldi recalls cream cheese spreads over potential salmonella exposure. What we know

A brand that sells cream cheese spreads at Aldi supermarkets has announced a voluntary recall after discovering a potential exposure to salmonella.

Schreiber Foods, which manufactures Happy Farms whipped cream cheese spread, announced the voluntary recall May 7 out of "an abundance of caution" after an ingredient in its cream cheese spread formula may have had exposure to salmonella.

The food manufacturer said there have not been any cases of illness or contamination reported from the product but Aldi said the following cream cheese products should be discarded or returned to the store for a full refund.

  • Happy Farms Whipped Cream Cheese Spread

  • Happy Farms Chive and Onion Cream Cheese Spread

  • Happy Farms Cream Cheese Spread

Happy Farms cream cheese was sold at several supermarkets across the country, including in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. Rockland County has two Aldi locations in Nanuet and Stony Point.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the salmonella bacteria causes nearly 1.35 million infections, 26,500 hospitalizations and 420 deaths in the United States every year, mostly through contaminated food.

If exposed, salmonella can cause diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps. Symptoms begin six hours to six days after infection and last four to seven days. Most people who are infected with the bacteria recover without specific treatment and do not need to take antibiotics, unless they are at risk of serious illness.

Additional information about the recall can be found on Aldi's website.
