Aldi looking to open another Johnson County grocery store in this former retail space

International chain Aldi is looking to open another discount grocery store in Overland Park.

The company has filed an application to move into the former Buybuy Baby space at 12055 Metcalf Ave., in the Southglen shopping center.

While city offiicials said they’ve received an application from Aldi for that address, the company did not respond to The Star’s requests for comment Monday.

Before Aldi can move in, it must go through the city’s approval process. The planning commission is scheduled to discuss it on May 13, according to the city’s permitting system.

Aldi has close to two dozen locations in the Kansas City area, including one 3 miles away at 8640 W. 135th St.

Last year, Buybuy Baby’s parent company — Bed Bath & Beyond — filed for bankruptcy and announced that it would close all Buybuy Baby stores.

In November, Buybuy Baby announced it would be reborn thanks to a “trusted fourth-trimester partner,” according to USA Today. The company hopes to reopen a handful of stores across the country.

Before Buybuy Baby moved into the space in 2011, the bookstore chain Borders operated there until it went out of business.

The prospective Aldi would be across the street from a Whole Foods that recently moved to 11900 Metcalf Ave.

In 1961, the Albrecht family opened their first discount grocery store in Germany. Sixteen years later, they opened their first American store in Iowa.
