Albuquerque locals can shred sensitive documents for free on April 20

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Better Business Bureau (BBB) of New Mexico is inviting locals to visit Black Dog Shredding (2800 Vassar Drive NE) on April 20 for free document shredding. The event will also offer free vehicle VIN etching to help address theft.

“The State of New Mexico ranks 39th in the country in reported identity theft cases, adjusted per-capita”, David Swope, CEO and president of BBB New Mexico and Southwest Colorado, said in a press release. “The economic impact ranges in dollar amounts but the average loss is around $550, roughly $1.5 million dollars in 2023.”

From 9:00 a.m. to noon, individuals can bring a maximum of two large garbage bags or boxes filled with paper documents for destruction. Visitors can also securely recycle sensitive electronic waste, like cell phones, computers, VCRs, cameras, and batteries. But televisions will not be accepted. Vin etching will run from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The first 500 vehicles arriving for vin etchings will get the change to enter and win special giveaway prizes.

BBB New Mexico of recommends shredding:

  • Bank statements, pay stubs, and medical bills more than a year old.

  • Paid utility bills more than a month old.

  • Pre-approved credit card or loan solicitations.

  • ATM receipts.

  • Supporting tax documents more than seven years old.

The event is supported by Black Dog Shredding, Kirtland Credit Union, KDSK –92.9 FM, PC Place, KOB 4, Albuquerque Police Department, New Mexico Department of Justice, Albuquerque Metro Crime Stoppers, and IntelliTec College. The overall goal is to prevent identity theft in the community.
