Albertville Police adds fourth dog to K9 unit

ALBERTVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — With the addition of a one-and-a-half-year-old German Shepard named Maui, the Albertville Police Department has four fully trained canines.

Now, these dogs primarily deal with drug-related issues and searches, as well as other things.

“Our dogs are used for narcotics and apprehension work,” Officer and K9 handler Quentin Scott said.

“So we use them from tracking and finding narcotics and other stuff like that,” he added.

When Albertville PD buys a dog, they don’t come fully trained.

So, they will spend 16 weeks at the Huntsville Police Department learning the ropes.

On Wednesday, Knox, Ace, Titus and Maui worked on obedience training as well as other drills including searching and sniffing out several boxes on a field looking for a suspect hiding.

“They help in a lot of different ways,” Officer Scott said. “They don’t just fight crime and find crime. There have been times when we’ve had a missing person or missing kid just walk off. We can actually use our dogs to track and see if we can help find that kid with the dog.”
