Alberta Crown says hasty charges, culture of delay led to botched sex case
EDMONTON - The man in charge of Alberta's Crown prosecutors promises there will never be another serious criminal case tossed out of court because it dragged on for too long.
Greg Lepp made the comments at a news conference in Calgary following an investigation into the sex assault case of Danielle Polsom of Airdrie, Alta.
Charges against the accused were stayed late last year because there had been so many delays that more than three years had gone by with no trial.
Polsom has agreed to be identified and a judge recently agreed to lift the publication ban on her name.
Lepp said there were many factors that led to the botched case, including a court culture that has become accustomed to lengthy delays.
Lepp said changes will be made to free up resources and prosecutors.
