Alaska unemployment rate falls to preliminary 6.2 percent for March, lowest in 5 years

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) -- Alaska's unemployment rate has hit a five-year low, falling to a preliminary 6.2 percent in March.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics says seasonally adjusted unemployment last reached that level in the state in March 2008.

Last month's figure compares to 6.5 percent in February and 7 percent in March 2012.

The state labor department says Alaska's unemployment rate has generally been on the decline since early 2010, when it hit 8.2 percent.

The national unemployment rate last month was 7.6 percent.
