Alaska Man Shoots Himself In The Head, Bullet Passes Through Striking Girlfriend In The Chest
An Alaska man faces up to 99 years in prison for killing his girlfriend in a botched suicide attempt. According to reports, Victor Sibson shot himself in the head, and his girlfriend of six years, 22-year-old Brittany-Mae Haag tried to stop him and in doing so was shot in the chest. Prosecutors say the bullet passed through Sibson’s head and took Haag’s life, while Sibson survived his injuries.
Initially, Haag’s mother Sheila Lopez thought Sibson killed her daughter intentionally, but soon learned she was killed because she tried to stop her boyfriend from committing suicide.
“Knowing my daughter, I would do the same thing, too,” Lopez said. “If someone was trying to kill themself, I would go and try to stop them, and I know that that’s what she would do. So, now it makes sense to me.”
Sibson’s blood alcohol level was three times the legal limit the day of the shooting. Assistant District Attorney James Fayette said Sibson doesn’t have any recollection of the event. The 21-year-old was indicted by a grand jury last week and he turned himself in after police released an advisory notifying residents they were unable to find him.
While in court Sibson, who told the judge he couldn’t afford an attorney, was seen wearing a helmet to cover up his injuries. He also asked the court to expedite the legal process.
“Could we figure out if I’m guilty or not today?” Sibson said.
