Alaska Airlines announces solar eclipse flights out of San Diego

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — On April 8, spring travelers might be able to catch a glimpse of the solar eclipse on two Alaska Airlines flights out of the San Diego International Airport (SAN), the airline announced Monday.

A total solar eclipse happens when the moon passes between the sun and the earth, completely blocking out the sun, according to NASA.

As long as the skies are clear, passengers will be able to experience the rare phenomenon from 35,000 feet in the air.

According to Alaska Airlines, two outbound flights from SAN on April 8 will have some of the best seats for optimum viewing.

One flight option departs from San Diego to the Boston Logan International Airport in Massachusetts at 8:10 a.m., and the other flies to Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia at 8:05 a.m.

The airline emphasizes that weather conditions, air traffic control and other unforeseen factors could impact the visibility of the solar eclipse as well as the timing of the flights.

From San Diego, people can view the solar eclipse from the ground starting around 10:03 a.m. The eclipse will peak at 11:11 a.m. and end at 12:23 p.m.
