Alan Carr gets choked up over Changing Ends bullying scenes

Alan Carr has admitted he felt "choked up" talking about watching his childhood bullying experiences play out on screen in his series Changing Ends.

The ITV series tells the comedian's early life story and the bullying he went through during his school days, which he spoke to This Morning about on Tuesday. Carr appeared with young actor Oliver Savell who plays him and told how he hoped the comedy would be helpful to other children going through bullying.

He told how watching young actor Savell, who plays him, acting out his tough experiences brought him to tears as the pair spoke to This Morning hosts Ben Shephard and Cat Deeley.

What, how, and why?

Carr said: "The final scene in episode six, I did burst into tears because it was just a bit too close to home and (Savell's) performance was so magical. I'm getting choked up now. I did say can you give me a few minutes because it was just magical and it brought back a lot of stuff."

Looking emotional, Carr explained that he kept in mind wanting other children in the same situation to be able to watch Changing Ends while he was writing it.

"I wanted it to be pre-watershed because if anyone's at school getting bullied or having a tough time, I want them to sit with their mum and dad and go I'm a bit different, my voice is a bit like this, I don't feel I'm like other people," he said. "At least they can watch it and it will help them a bit. It does turn out alright, we're on This Morning!"

The Chatty Man host also added that his mum and dad, who feature in Changing Ends played by Nancy Sullivan and Shaun Dooley, approved of the show. "They love it," he said. "I was so worried about how they were going to take it, but it's just a lovely show."

What else happened on This Morning?

Elsewhere on the show, David Neilson who plays beloved Coronation Street character Roy Cropper appeared to talk about his latest storyline, which sees him accused of murdering teenager Lauren Bolton.

Neilson admitted: "I'm amazed he hasn't been in prison before because everyone else has."

He also talked about Roy's most famous storyline, his relationship with late wife Hayley (Julie Hesmondhalgh) who was the soap's first trans character.

"The law of soaps says that you have to have a relationship," he said. "The initial thing was that it was a device, (Roy) was going to run a mile when he found out (Hayley) was born as a man.

"But the casting of Julie was brilliant. For me it was about a bullying, it was just difference. Why can't we do that?"

He added of Roy's popularity: "It just shows people are alright otherwise they wouldn't relate to a character who was so kind. There's a thing - be more Roy."
