Alabama District 2 Congressional candidates Caroleene Dobson and Shomari Figures advance to November general election

MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — A Democrat and a Republican who hope to represent Alabama’s newly redrawn District 2 will advance to the Nov. 5 general election.

Republican Caroleene Dobson defeated Dick Brewbaker during the April 16 Alabama Primary Runoff Election. Democrat Shomari Figures defeated Anthony Daniels.

Republican Race:

Dobson won the GOP primary with 58.42 % of the votes as of 10 a.m. on April 17. Brewbaker had 41.58% of the votes, according to unofficial results.

The Montgomery attorney thanked voters in the 2nd District for their vote and vowed to advocate for Alabama families.

“Inflation does not know party, the impacts from our chaotic southern border do not know party, the loss of a loved one from fentanyl or victims of crime does not know party,” Dobson said in a statement. “I got into this race to fight for Alabama families, all Alabama families in the second district, regardless of party.”

Democratic Race:

Figures, who worked in the capitol office of Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) and in the Obama White House, received 61.05% of the vote, according to unofficial results as of 10 a.m. on April 17. Daniels received just 38.95% of the vote.

Figures thanked his supporters in a statement.

“At the end of the day this race is not about me,” he said. “This race has always been about the people and places that call our community home. It’s about our teachers, public service workers, people in uniform, our seniors, and the children of our District. To all of those who have placed their trust and confidence in me, thank you. Now, we move forward with a unified party and mission to win in November.”

What’s next?

Dobson and Figures will advance to the Nov. 5 general election. The winner will then be elected to the U.S. House of Representatives District 2 seat.

Also during the April 16 primary election runoff, these candidates secured victories:

  • Tony Odom won the Washington County Commission District 1 Republican nomination over Chris Murphy.

  • Daniel Smith won the Washington County Commission District 3 Republican nomination over William Beasley.

  • Brian Harrison won the Monroe County Board of Education District 3 Republican nomination over Justin House.
