Alabama Charter School Commission closes the door on local charter school

DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — The Alabama Public Charter School Commission voted to deny Dothan’s first charter school 8-0 in a meeting Monday Morning.

The Barnabas School of Leadership was supposed to open in 2023 at Greater Beulah Baptist Church but the school was granted another year after a legal dispute between the founder Pastor Darryl Roberts and the church congregation causing him to resign.

The charter commission had 30 days to decide whether to extend the charter school to open in August 2025 or to revoke the charter school after they breached their contract.

The founder, Pastor Darryl Roberts, told WDHN in March that the principal abruptly left and they faced financial challenges.

Two board members abstained from voting.
