Alabama man sentenced in Virginia for wire fraud, paying bribes to Coast Guard officer
NORFOLK, Va. (AP) -- An Alabama man has been sentenced to five years and three months in prison for wire fraud and paying bribes to a Coast Guard transportation officer.
Fifty-two-year-old Huffman Earl Monk of Brookwood, Ala., was sentenced Monday in federal court in Norfolk. He pleaded guilty in January.
The officer, 30-year-old Nathan Allen Dunn, also of Brookwood, is set for sentencing May 8 after pleading guilty to wire fraud and taking bribes.
Dunn was a transportation officer from October 2009 to November 2011 at the Surface Forces Logistics Center in Norfolk, where he was in charge of coordinating the shipment of large freight between Coast Guard bases.
Prosecutors say Dunn conspired to award overpriced or fake shipment contracts to 12 companies owned by Monk in exchange for bribery payments of about $220,000.
