Akron Public Schools plan to cut 286 positions to save $24M

AKRON, Ohio (WJW) – Akron Public Schools is planning to cut a total of 286 positions by June 30.

Akron Public Schools is planning to implement the “APS Fiscal Reorganization and Restructuring Plan” to address financial challenges “while maintaining educational excellence,” according to a press release from the district.

The plan outlines eliminating certain positions to “optimize resources while minimizing the impact on teaching and learning.” The plan will reduce the district’s expenses by about $24 million, according to the release.

“We remain committed to excellence in education despite financial challenges,” Superintendent Michael Robinson said. “Our decisions are guided by this commitment to provide an exceptional education for our scholars.”

According to the release, the district said it is facing financial deficits and emphasized the need for financial adjustments.

“While adjustments to staff are included in the plan, our review and intensive evaluation process led us to identify more areas for savings across the board,” said Executive Director of Human Capital Yamini Adkins.“

Positions being eliminated include:

  • 58 non-classroom (do not work directly with students) teaching positions

  • 66 1/2 classroom teaching positions

  • 77 non-licensed/certified substitute tutor positions

  • 16 administrator positions

  • 16 non-bargaining unit positions

  • 16 non-certified professional staff positions

  • 15 clerical/support staff positions

  • 11 custodial positions
