“I think it’s great, we need stuff like that,” said resident Daniel Lewis.

People who live along Nome Avenue in Akron reacted to the news that Akron’s Ring doorbell program is expanding.

“That’s a good thing, it’s a theft deterrent,” said resident Mark Nurse.

Starting Wednesday May 1, 2024, all residents including homeowners and renters,
can apply for a free Ring Doorbell camera.

“3,000 cameras will be distributed free of charge. That’s 300 cameras per ward,” said Akron City Council President Margo Sommerville. He said the program is funded through the American Rescue Plan Act.

Residents can voluntarily decide if they want to turn over video to the police.

“That is up to the resident. However, we are encouraging it,” said Sommerville.

The program limits one camera per household. You can apply here for a Ring Doorbell from the City of Akron.
