Airbus to cut 1,700 jobs in UK
Aerospace giant Airbus is to cut 1,700 jobs in the UK in response to the impact of the coronavirus on the sector, the company announced
The firm operates sites at Broughton in north Wales, where its wings are manufactured, and another other factory at Filton in Bristol.
The company is cutting 15,000 jobs across its global operations. 5,100 positions will be cut from its German operation, while another 5,000 will be cut in France.
A statement from the firm said: "Airbus has announced plans to adapt its global workforce and resize its commercial aircraft activity in response to the Covid-19 crisis.
"This adaptation is expected to result in a reduction of around 15,000 positions no later than summer 2021.
"The information and consultation process with social partners has begun with a view to reaching agreements for implementation starting in autumn 2020."
It comes as firms related to air travel are dramatically impacted by the virus. Earlier today union Balpa announced budget airline Easyjet is considering cutting more than 700 pilot jobs and closing its bases at Stansted, Southend and Newcastle airport.
