Aiken Public Safety responds to shots fired on Hampton Avenue
Jan. 11—Around 2 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, Aiken Public Safety officers responded to the 500 block of Hampton Avenue N.W. in reference to a possible shooting.
About half a dozen police cars responded to the scene and were "told by a bystander that someone had shot themselves in the shoulder and they were located in the bedroom [of one of the apartments]," according to an incident report obtained from the Aiken Department of Public Safety.
Officers entered the apartment and located a locked door to the bedroom. After giving commands for the suspect to exit, officers forced entry into the room.
The suspect was detained and transported to an area hospital for a mental evaluation.
Lt. Jennifer Hayes with the Aiken Department of Public Safety said it was a negligent discharge of a firearm with property damage and no one was injured.
