Aiken County Council approves second readings of two rezoning ordinances

Mar. 2—During a meeting that lasted less than 30 minutes, Aiken County Council approved Tuesday the second readings of two ordinances involving zoning changes.

One would authorize a new zoning designation of Limited Development for approximately an acre of property at 1498 Silver Bluff Road in Aiken. The current zoning is Office Residential.

There is a one-story single-family residence on the land, which is owned by Nana Carlton. She is the widow of a former Aiken County coroner, Tim Carlton, who died in 2019.

Nana Carlton wants to move her business, the Nania Aveda Concept Hair Salon, from 1404 Whiskey Road to a freestanding garage, which would be renovated, on the Silver Bluff Road land.

County Council's vote on that ordinance was 7-2. Sandy Haskell of District 5 and Camille Furgiuele of District 2 opposed the zoning change.

During its January meeting, the Aiken County Planning Commission voted unanimously not to recommend the requested zoning change to County Council.

The other ordinance would authorize a new zoning designation of Residential Multifamily Development for an approximately 6.5-acre tract on Connector Road in Graniteville. The current zoning is Residential Single Family Conservation.

County Council unanimously approved the ordinance's second reading

The Planning Commission voted unanimously during its January meeting to recommend that zoning change to County Council.

Sherry M. Wilson told the Planning Commission that she wanted to put a mobile home, which is nicer than "just your average mobile home," on the property.

Wilson said that when she purchased the mobile home, she thought it was a modular home.

Mobile homes are not allowed in areas with Residential Single Family Conservation zoning, but are permitted in locations with a Residential Multifamily Development designation.

Three readings are required for an ordinance's final approval.

County Council's Tuesday meeting was held at the Aiken County Government Center.
