She had jumped into the river to aid an 11-year-old daughter who was struggling to stay afloat, the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office said. It reported that searchers found Duran’s body at about 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

“In honor of her memory and the support of her family, we have created this GoFundMe page to raise funds for the Guzman Duran family during this unimaginable difficult time,” the appeal says. It also has a Spanish version.

The family had moved from Washington state just two weeks earlier and was not employed, a cousin told The Modesto Bee on Saturday as a few dozen loved ones gathered next to the river to await word on Duran’s whereabouts.

“Brenda, a young mother full of love and laughter, leaves behind her three children, her husband and her extended family that will forever hold her in her heart,” the appeal says.

As of 10:30 a.m. Monday, it had raised $770 from 19 donors.
