Agreement reached to transfer Pimlico to racing authority

A bill to rebuild Pimlico Race Course in northwest Baltimore and shut down operations at Laurel Park in Prince George's County is now under consideration by state lawmakers. According to those with direct knowledge of the agreement, there is a binding commitment between the Maryland Racing Authority and the current track operator, The Stronach Group, to transfer Pimlico to the racing authority. Lawmakers must approve $400 million in bonds to pay for the renovations. Under the plan, the Preakness Stakes would run at Pimlico this year and next year and move to Laurel Park for one year in 2026. The race would return to Pimlico in 2027.
