Agents of SHIELD boss says characters could appear in MCU after season 7
Marvel's Agents of SHIELD is the show that had defied expectations time and time again. During the ropey season one, no-one thought it would last. After they killed off Coulson at the end of season five, we (and they) thought it was done.
Then it was given a season six. And a season seven.
But even with the seventh run being touted as the definite ending, it may not be the last time we see these characters.
"There's always a chance," co-showrunner Jed Whedon said during the San Diego Comic-Con panel for the show. "Anything could happen."
Is this something that could actually happen, or is Jed just trying to help us feel better about the show finally coming to an end? Avengers: Endgame was the first Marvel movie to include a character from the TV shows, so anything's possible.
One thing we're unlikely to see in SHIELD's final season, however, is any reference to the events of Endgame and especially that Blip/Snap debacle, with Marvel TV head honcho Jeph Loeb stating: "These stories take place before that happened."
Also during the panel, Agent Coulson star Clark Gregg reflected on his character being killed off, revealing that his final scene as Coulson was so emotional he couldn't even rehearse it.
"We really thought that was going to be the end," Loeb said of the decision to kill Coulson in season 5.
"We never know when we're shooting the thing if we're going to get another season," Gregg added. "We weren't sure if we would. What was written was really beautiful, and really a culmination of a lot of stuff.
"The membrane between the fictional story and our real lives gets very thin – there's a lot of history and love and we've been through a lot of stuff together, so saying 'goodbye'... I couldn't even rehearse the scene."
He added: "It was an amazing episode to shoot... and nobody was more surprised than me to hear about [Gregg's new season 6 character] Sarge."
