LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is warning anyone seeking treatment for a substance abuse disorder through Pine Rest Christian Services, to beware of a fake phone number posted online.

An attorney for Pine Rest said patients have been improperly diverted to out-of-state facilities by fake online phone numbers claiming to be for Pine Rest.

Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services is a mental health care service provider, located in Western Michigan and provides inpatient mental health services, outpatient counseling, inpatient detoxification, along with mental health services.

Pine Rest said when some patients search for its company using their cell phones, the fake advertisement appears on search results. Upon calling the number, people seeking treatment are told there are no beds or appointments available and attempt to divert patients to another mental health service provider typically out-of-state such as California to receive services, according to Pine Rest.

“This appears to be a cruel scheme targeting those suffering from substance abuse disorder, striking treatment-seeking victims in a moment of courage when they’ve finally sought professional help,” said Nessel. “This scam heaps fake hurdles to mental health assistance upon already vulnerable individuals and could further burden them with significant unnecessary costs if they can afford to get the recommended out-of-state help. For those who could afford treatment close to home but not expensive out-of-state options, they may be deterred from treatment permanently.”

“That is especially egregious and cruel when the treatment they seek is potentially lifesaving substance abuse services. My office will investigate these allegations thoroughly and bring all appropriate charges if laws have been broken,” said Nessel.

The real Pine Rest Christian Services phone number is (800) 678-5500. For more information, Pine Rest published a news release warning potential patients.
