Aftermath of typhoon Nida in Hong Kong

Typhoon Nida pummelled Hong Kong on Tuesday (02 August), shutting down most of the financial hub and triggering airport chaos as passengers scramble for flights.

Schools and shops were cancelled, while several transport services were halted after Typhoon 8 signal — the third-strongest category — was hoisted over Hong Kong, reports said.

The Hong Kong airport saw hundreds of flights cancelled, leaving thousands of passengers stranded and about 325 flights expected to be rescheduled.

The typhoon left a trail of destruction with trees being uprooted and some buildings damaged.

On Tuesday afternoon, the storm showed signs of weakening and the tropical cyclone warning was lowered from an 8 to a 3.
