S. Africa building collapse: rescuers search through rubble

STORY: Rescuers were searching through the rubble of a multi-storey building in the South African city of George on Tuesday (May 7).

The unfinished building collapsed on Monday (May 6) afternoon, killing at least five and trapping dozens more.

Colin Deiner, chief of disaster management for the Western Cape province, said they were focusing on areas where they have been hearing people.

"It's going to get more and more difficult as the days go on, because we're going to have to start lifting the structures off, so that’s when we’re going to have to start bringing out cranes. But at the moment we've got areas we're focusing, there's quite a few more alive people, it’s the most I’ve ever seen in a structural collapse like this.”

The municipality of George, a coastal city east of Cape Town, said in a statement on Tuesday morning that twenty-six of the construction workers at the site had been removed from the rubble.

President Cyril Ramaphosa offered his condolences to the families of the deceased.

He has called for an investigation.
