Affordable housing units open for seniors experiencing homelessness

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — An affordable housing development for seniors experiencing homelessness celebrated its grand opening in San Diego’s Nestor neighborhood on Thursday.

Nestor Senior Village has 73 affordable rental housing units and offers supportive services for seniors ages 55 and older experiencing or at risk of homelessness. It was built on land leased for 90 years from Nestor United Methodist Church.

San Diego County’s Behavioral Health Services department will be the lead service provider for residents of 35 units who are specifically participating in the No Place Like Home program. Father Joe’s Villages will provide services for residents of the 38 other units.

According to Thursday’s release by the San Diego Housing Commission, the studio units will remain affordable for 55 years for seniors with an income of up to 30% of San Diego’s area media income, which is $28,950 a year for a single-person household.

Residents who will be living in the Nestor Senior Village were identified through the Regional Task Force on Homelessness’ coordinated entry system.

The commission awarded 73 rental housing vouchers to help residents pay their rent, as well as a $3.3 million loan toward the development. The commission said when a resident moves out of the development, the voucher will stay in place to help another senior experiencing homelessness.

Other services will be provided by Alpha Project Tenant Peer Support Services, San Ysidro Health, San Diego Program for All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) and Casa Familiar.

The village was a collaboration with the San Diego Housing Commission with units developed by National Community Renaissance.
