Affidavit provides more details on south Austin roadway shooting

AUSTIN (KXAN) — An affidavit provided more details on what led to a south Austin roadway shooting that left two people injured, including a child, back in January.

The shooting happened in the 1300 block of West Ben White Boulevard, according to police. That’s near Menchaca Road.

A woman driving a blue Kia was driving from the Sunset Valley area eastbound on Ben White Boulevard. Then, a dark grey Volkswagen cut off the Kia, which made the woman upset, according to a witness who was in the Kia, court records said.

When the Volkswagen cut off the Kia, there was a rock that hit the front windshield, which again, upset the woman. Court records identified the woman as Yaquelyn Pedraza Castelan, 25.

When Castelan spoke to investigators, she initially said the suspect in the vehicle waved his gun and then “threw something at her vehicle.” During this time, Castelan said she told the passenger to grab her gun from her glovebox but that she didn’t “pull it or anything,” according to the affidavit.

However, the passenger told investigators Castelan sped up after the rock hit her vehicle to “catch up to the suspect vehicle and pulled onto the left side. She then rolled down the window and said “what’s your problem” to the Volkswagen, court records said. This is when Castelan told the passenger to hand her the gun. She then showed her gun first to the Volkswagen before the suspect in the Volkswagen “pulled out his handgun,” according to the affidavit.

The shooting between both Castelan and the suspect in the Volkswagen resulted in multiple injuries for the passenger in the Kia. A child was also in Castelan’s vehicle, and the child suffered a gunshot wound to the face, according to the affidavit.

Castelan was arrested and booked into the Travis County jail on a charge of endangering a child on March 28. On the same day, she was released on a $25,000 bond, according to Travis County online court records.
