Aetna backs 2012 outlook, offers 2013 forecast

Aetna says it will earn about $5.40 per share in 2013 with revenue up about 9 percent

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) -- Health insurer Aetna Inc. said Tuesday that it expects to earn about $5.40 per share from operations in 2013, up about 6 percent from this year.

Aetna also said revenue will rise about 9 percent, which suggests about $38.7 billion. Aetna membership is expected to grow slightly, to about 18.4 million at the end of the year.

Analysts expect net income of $5.52 per share and $38.92 billion in revenue, according to FactSet.

The company maintained its 2012 forecasts for profit of about $5.10 per share on $35.5 billion in revenue, with membership of 18.2 million.

Analysts expect net income of $5.15 per share and $35.36 billion in revenue.

Shares fell 20 cents to $44.48 per share Tuesday and rose 67 cents to $45.15 in after-hours trading.
