The meal Adolf Hitler ate just hours before killing himself has been revealed by letters from his personal cook.

Third Reich chef Constanze Manziarly, nicknamed Miss Marzipani, sent the information to her sister in Austria in 1944.

The dish? Pasta with tomato sauce. Turns out that alliance with Italy was good for something.

The letters also shine a light on the terrifying conditions the dictator's staff lived under in the latter days of the war.

Se wrote that Hitler left her "feeling that I have one foot in the grave", and that "I am not exaggerating. I encounter unimaginable difficulties that I cannot report."

Hitler, who didn't eat meat, housed Manziarly in a mountain location to study raw vegetarian recipes. She told her sister, "It is my cast-iron duty. But what makes me so worn out is the immense burden of responsibility I must bear with it", and revealed that any kind of resistance "would probably end up with me being in court".

Manziarly revealed that Hitler liked millet or quark with linseed oil and replaced meat with chopped mushrooms. He often ate two grated apples for dessert, but would often "lose control" and eat cakes during late night meetings.

On the night of Hitler's suicide, Manziarly had prepared a dinner of fried eggs and mashed potates, but he was already dead by the time the meal had got to him. The chef attempted to escape soon after, but was captured by Red Army soldier and, according to Hitler's secretary Tradul Junge, was never seen or heard from again.

Researcher Stefan Dietrich described the letters, saying: "It was probably not unlike that scene in The Godfather - Hitler probably made her an offer she couldn't refuse."
