Additional ballot count on Wednesday solidifies top six places in school board race

The top six candidates in the May 14 primary election for Frederick County Board of Education have solidified their chances of advancing to the general election.

After provisional ballots and some mail-in ballots were counted on Wednesday, sixth-place Veronica Lowe widened her lead over seventh-place Tabitha McLoughlin from 166 votes to 258 votes.

The top six candidates will advance to the Nov. 5 general election. They are competing for three open seats on the board.

Frederick County has counted 17,821 mail-in ballots. The only ones left to count will be whatever has arrived at the board office by Friday, with a postmark by May 14.

Election officials also counted provisional ballots, which are cast at the polls when there is a question, usually about a voter’s eligibility or registration.

After Wednesday’s count, the top six places remained the same.

Janie Monier now leads with 14,531 votes. Josh Bokee is second with 14,328 votes, followed by Chad King Wilson Sr. with 14,004 votes.

All three were endorsed by Frederick County Public Schools’ employee unions.

Board of Education 2024 Primary Election Results

In fourth place is Jaime Kiersten Brennan, with 12,585 votes.

Colt Morningstar Black is in fifth place with 11,496 votes.

Lowe, in sixth, has 6,875 votes. McLoughlin, in seventh, has 6,617 votes.

Any remaining ballots are scheduled to be counted on Friday, then the election results would be certified.
