Adams County deputy takes plea deal in daughter's shooting death

Dec. 2—An Adams County Sheriff's deputy who was charged in connection with the shooting death of his 3-year-old daughter has accepted a plea deal and was sentenced to probation.

Brett Eskam, 39, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count of failing to securely store a firearm on Nov. 15 in Weld County Court, according to online court records.

He was sentenced to six months of probation on the same day.

Adams County Sheriff's Office officials did not return requests for comment on Eskam's status Friday.

Officials with the Adam's County Sheriff's Office said at the time of the shooting that the department would not make any disciplinary decisions until the criminal investigations were finalized.

On May 8, Frederick police officers responded to a 911 call reporting a shooting inside a Frederick home and discovered Avery Elaine Eskam, 3, had been shot. She was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

Both parents, Brett Eskam and Elaine Eskam, were charged with six counts of failing to secure a firearm.

Elaine Eskam's case remains pending.
