Activities, events for Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — May is always a big month for the military community.

Armed Forces Day, which honors and recognizes the different branches of military service and those who are currently serving, falls on the third Saturday of May each year. This year, it is May 18.

Memorial Day honors and remembers those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country. It is falls on the last Monday of May each year. This year, that is May 27.

Here are some events taking place around El Paso and Fort Bliss this month to remember both of those days.

Armed Forces Day Parade and Celebration: 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 18 at Smith-Bliss Field, West Fort Bliss

The parade is open to the public and runs along Sheridan Road.

Smith-Bliss Field will have military working dog demonstrations, displays of military equipment and vehicles, inflatables, food trucks, music, games and other activities.

El Paso Chihuahuas Memorial Day game: 7 p.m. on Sunday, May 26 at Southwest University Park.

The 1st Armored Division Color Guard will present the colors before the game.

Fort Bliss Memorial Day Ceremony: 9 a.m. Monday, May 27 at Fort Bliss Cemetery

This is usually the biggest and most widely attended Memorial Day ceremony in the El Paso area.

Concordia Cemetery Memorial Day Ceremony: 10 a.m. on Monday, May 27 at Concordia Cemetery

Ceremony honors the veterans laid to rest at Concordia, the site of Camp Cordia at Old Fort Bliss. Fort Bliss will provide a vocalist and bugler from the 1st Armed Division Band and Fort Bliss personnel will do the invocation.
