There’s an absolutely precious “Gilmore Girls” wedding detail in “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”
If the whimsical Amazon series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel feels familiar to you, that’s probably for a reason. The new streaming series was created by Amy Sherman-Palladino, the genius and fabulous talent behind Gilmore Girls. The shows are similar in vibe, with independent women and fast-paced dialogue at the center — and they share much more than that.

In Gilmore Girls, Lorelai’s mother Emily laments the wedding she was never able to plan for her daughter, BuzzFeed points out. Headstrong and independent, Lorelai never did anything her mother expected her to; she certainly didn’t allow Emily to arrange the wedding she wanted Lorelai to have. In a detail that crosses space and time in the Sherman-Palladino-verse, though, someone did get to have that wedding. A scene from The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel in which Midge reflects on her wedding reveals that she and Emily Gilmore must know the same wedding planner.
In the Season 2 episode “Dead Uncles and Vegetables,” Emily pitches in to help plan Sookie’s wedding. When she starts to go overboard, Lorelai stops her, convinced that her mom is projecting her own interests onto Sookie instead of listening to the bride-to-be. As it turns out, she was just trying to recreate the winter wonderland, Romanov-era, snowy wedding she wanted Lorelai to have. And it finally happened — just on a different show!
For all the amazing similarities between both shows, this one has to be the sweetest.
Emily is a challenging character for some fans to accept. Gilmore Girls‘ younger, idealistic fans tend to side with impulsive Lorelai over her domineering mother. We rarely consider just how much Lorelai put Emily through, and she masks her frustration (and sadness) with amazingly bratty quips at her daughter’s expense. It’s heartwarming that someone got to have the wedding Emily wanted for Lorelai — even if it’s on a different series, in a different time, and the relationship was doomed.
Even though Lorelai did get married eventually, and she did it her way (Read: It wasn’t a winter wonderland, Romanov-era, snowy wedding), we gotta admit: Emily had some good ideas. Midge’s wedding looked great.
