Abilene Boy Scout achieves Eagle status after restoring 100-year-old camp

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – An Abilene Boy Scout advanced to Eagle Scout status last Saturday after completing a project at Buffalo Gap Presbyterian Camp to help better his community. It was a project close to his heart, and many others.

JT Partin, a junior at Wylie High School, told KTAB/KRBC he’s been attending Buffalo Gap Presbyterian Camp since he was in middle school, and he chose to give back to the special place that had been there for him all the while.

“I chose this project specifically because I remember back whenever I was a little kid, I came out here for the first time and I came in this Trinity Tree, and it was just a very special moment for me, and it felt like I was enclosed in nature and connected with God,” JT said.

Having worked at the camp for several years as a camper, camp manager James Myers, said he wasn’t so surprised when JT asked to revamp the worship space.

“We’re always trying to do some touch up, but I’m a one man,” revealed Myers. “If he sees something that needs doing, he doesn’t mind jumping in and doing it. He doesn’t mind. When he zoned in on this one, I said, ‘well, okay, let’s do your project. You take off, do what you need to do. Let me know what how I can help.'”

JT and some of his closest friends and family helped replace the camp’s Trinity Tree area, which is often used for gatherings and worship sessions. The teenager was able to fund the project through donations from loved ones, supporters, and even the Home Depot.

“We’ve just been overwhelmed by the donations, and J.T. wrote letters and sent them out to friends and family and community members… He’s raised cash over $3,000, almost $4,000,” Lauren Partin, JT’s mother, shared.

After two days of hard work and many helping hands, JT’s project was complete, giving the old camp a new look for future campers just like him to enjoy.
