Abilene animal expert warns care considerations before buying Easter pets

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – The upcoming Easter holiday means gifts for a lot of families, including baskets of candy or live animals related to the season, like ducks, bunnies, or little chicks. But, those cute critters will grow.

If you are thinking of giving one of the little guys a peep, experts say you should consider the responsibility required to take care of them. Jimmy Wylie, manager of Jackson Bro’s Feed & Seed, told KTAB/KRBC he’s seen the impact of this trend with the holiday in his store.

“Everybody gets excited about chickens this time of year,” Wylie said. “Kids love the rabbits this time of year and the chicks really will be closer to this weekend probably as far as for Easter.”

Bird flu, weather and inflation conspire to keep egg prices near historic highs for Easter

After buying a new chick or bunny, you should make sure that they are taken care of the correct way, especially at a smaller size is essential. One of the biggest mistakes new owners make is heat.

“Those chicks, until they get feathers… They need to be up to 95 degrees. They have to have heat. They need a heat lamp on them, and so, we need to keep them keep them warm and keep them fed, and keep plenty of water out for them. So, and then bunnies, typically, they’re pretty easy to take care of; just food and water, and keep their pans clean and hygiene,” advised Wylie.

When spontaneously getting an animal as a gift or fad, Wylie said it’s typical to not take care into consideration. Leading to ill will for the chirping little guys.

“They’re all cute and cuddly at first… Then when they’re (families) done with them, they’re done with them, and they don’t get taken very good care of sometimes. That breaks the kids’ heart if their little chick dies pretty quick,” Wylie added.

If you do decide to get a chick, duckling, or bunny for your family this Easter holiday, talk with the experts at the pet store to ensure you’re taking the best care of the critter and they can become a part of your family.
