Abandoned ‘Hollywood in the Desert’

This incredible film studio in Ouarzazate, Morocco, is known as “Hollywood in the Desert.” Hundreds of films and TV shows — ranging from “Game of Thrones” to “Gladiator” — have been filmed on this facility, known as Atlas Studios, since it opened in 1983. With many sets abandoned in place, parts of the site now look beautifully derelict. You’ve probably seen it in films and TV shows countless times — but now, instead of glitzed-up movie sets, you can take a look at the real Atlas Studios.

Plenty of fake blood has been spilled in the temples and training grounds, where scenes for films including “The Mummy” and “Lawrence of Arabia” were shot. The site was recently featured in “The Grand Tour.” Photographer Bob Thissen, 31, visited the abandoned sections of the famous movie set this month. (Caters News)
