On the night Hillary Clinton made history by accepting the Democratic Party’s nomination for the presidency, the world wasn’t just watching at home passively as it had in past elections, but speaking out and reacting in real time over social media. Data from Instagram, Twitter and other services also indicate which moments from the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia resonated with the American people. Genetically modified wheat not approved for sale or commercial production in the United States has been found growing in a field in Washington state, agriculture officials said Friday, posing a possible risk to trade with countries concerned about engineered food. The Food and Drug Administration says genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, are safe and little scientific concern exists about the safety of those on the market. On Friday, President Barack Obama signed into law a bill that will require labeling of genetically modified ingredients for the first time.
China, Australia and Malaysia announced last week that the more than two-year-long hunt for the missing flight would be suspended once the current search area in the Indian Ocean has been completely scoured, something expected by the end of the year. The debris, which was found on Pemba Island off the coast of Tanzania, was analyzed by experts at the Australian Transport Safety Bureau, which is heading up the search for the plane in a remote stretch of ocean far off Australia’s west coast. Several pieces of the doomed airliner have washed ashore in various spots around the southern Indian Ocean since it vanished more than two years ago with 239 people on board.
The UN on Friday urged Russia to give it control of humanitarian passages out of Aleppo in northern Syria where besieged residents cowered indoors afraid to use what some called "death corridors". A monitoring group, meanwhile, reported that at least 18 civilians were killed in air strikes in the city of Aleppo and in the provincial town of Atareb. Syrian regime ally Russia has said three humanitarian passages would be opened for civilians and surrendering fighters seeking to exit Aleppo's eastern districts.

Blue holes are large marine caverns characterized by dark blue waters in the center of the circle, ringed by light blue waters.
Last week, the DNC saw thousands of emails leaked. It led to angry Bernie supporters protesting at the convention and accusations that Russia was attempting to influence the US elections using WikiLeaks as a catspaw. Now another leaker, Edward Snowden, has taken on WikiLeaks on Twitter, and it opens the door to looking at the ethics of leaking.

A Dallas meteorogist has resigned after writing a racially insensitive Facebook post bashing the Democratic National Convention. Pope Francis' visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau on Friday included an encounter with 25 Christian Poles who rescued Jews during the Holocaust — a powerfully symbolic meeting that Poland's chief rabbi played a key role in orchestrating. Rabbi Michael Schudrich, a native of New York City whose grandparents all immigrated from Poland, had long hoped to see such a meeting in Poland between a pope and some of the remaining Poles who risked their lives during World War II to help and protect Jews. Yad Vashem in Israel has recognized 6,620 Polish gentiles who sheltered Jews among the so-called "Righteous Among the Nations." Today fewer than 240 in Poland are still alive.

Mark Salter, former chief of staff to Sen. John McCain, has written an essay for Real Clear Politics on why he cannot vote for Donald Trump. It deserves note for the long-term record because this is not how associates of a party’s former nominee usually talk about the current one, and because of its insistence on the importance of tax returns. Could it be that a major party nominee for president is beholden to Russia’s leader and might compromise the security interests of the U.S. and our allies to maintain that relationship? We don’t know the answer….
