Bavarian investigator Robert Heimberger said the shooter, an 18-year-old German-Iranian identified only as David S., visited the site of a previous school shooting in the German town of Winnenden and took photographs last year, then set about planning the attack in which he killed nine and wounded some three dozen others before taking his own life. “He had been planning this crime since last summer,” Heimberger told reporters. There is so far no evidence that he knew any of his victims, or that there was any political motivation behind the attack, said Thomas Steinkraus-Koch, a spokesman for the Munich prosecutors’ office.
DUBAI/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Iran confirmed on Sunday the detention of an Iranian-American visiting the country, the latest in a string of arrests of dual nationals in the past year. Asked about reports of the arrest on national security charges, Judiciary spokesman Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei told a weekly news conference: "The report on the arrest of an Iranian-American dual national is correct," the semi-official Fars news agency said. Mohseni Ejei declined to name the individual and said he did not know what specific charges would be lodged.

Hundreds of neighbors and other well-wishers greeted Kaine and his wife, Anne Holton, on their return to their home in Richmond on a hot and sticky Saturday night. What seemed to merely be a confirmation that the DNC — run by Debbie Wasserman Schultz before she resigned on Sunday — had it out for Bernie Sanders, has turned into a full-blown investigation into whether Russia was behind the email hack and subsequent leak, all to help Donald Trump win the U.S. presidential election. Now the FBI has gotten involved in this latest election mess and strongly suspects that Russia is responsible. According to the Daily Beast, officials with knowledge of the investigation say that the FBI suspects this because of the timing of the leak, because of Trump’s own connections to Russia and President Vladimir Putin and because the emails were then given to Wikileaks, which has an anti-U.S. government bent.
British holidaymakers spent hours sweating in their cars as 15-hour queues snaked back from the port of Dover on Sunday due to heightened entry checks by French border police. Dover is Britain's main ferry port to continental Europe, with Calais in northeastern France 21 miles (33 kilometres) away across the Channel.

In a somewhat bizarre turn of events, Tesla and the owner of a Model X involved in a crash a few weeks ago have been involved in a war of words as of late. Last week, a man known as Mr. Pang wrote an open letter to Tesla wherein he blamed the company’s Autopilot software for causing his Model X to spontaneously swerve into a guard rail and ultimately cause him to get into a serious accident. Immediately following the accident, Tesla issued a statement indicating that Autopilot was not used appropriately at the time of the crash.

By Daren Butler and Seda Sezer ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Turkey ordered the detention of 42 journalists on Monday, broadcaster NTV reported, under a crackdown following a failed coup that has targeted more than 60,000 people and drawn fire from the European Union. The arrests or suspensions of soldiers, police, judges and civil servants in response to the July 15-16 putsch have raised concerns among rights groups and Western countries, who fear President Tayyip Erdogan is capitalizing on it to tighten his grip on power. EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker questioned Ankara's long-standing aspiration to join the EU.

The Iraqi military will use a medieval tactic to keep control of Fallujah after recapturing it from the Islamic State group last month: It is digging a trench around the city. The trench will have a single opening for residents to move in and out of the city, which is virtually empty since the offensive that defeated the IS militants, said Lt. Gen. Abdul-Wahab al-Saadi, deputy commander of the counterterrorism forces that led the successful campaign. It will be about 7 miles (11 kilometers) long and "will protect the city's residents, who have lived through many tragedies, as well as security forces deployed there," al-Saadi said in an interview with The Associated Press at his Baghdad headquarters.
