Sons of jailed drug kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman were likely behind an armed attack on a military convoy on Friday, which left five soldiers dead and 10 wounded, a senior security official said. The attack took place in the early morning on the edge of the city of Culiacan in northern Sinaloa state, along Mexico's Pacific coast, the home base of the Sinaloa Cartel, whose former leader Guzman was recaptured in January. The convoy was transporting a detainee, Julio Ortiz, when it was ambushed by armed men hurling grenades which caused two of the convoy's vehicles to burst into flames, said General Alfonso Duarte, the regional defense ministry commander in charge of Sinaloa.

Abdel Aziz and his entourage escaped unscathed, the ministry said.
The boot is one of the most nefarious forms of parking enforcement ever devised. Created by New York-based Ideas That Stick, the Barnacle consists of a folding plastic tray with a pair of potent suction cups on its backside. If a meter maid or other law-enforcement official comes across an illegally-parked vehicle, he or she slaps the Barnacle across the windshield, obstructing the driver’s view until said driver calls the company’s hotline and pays the fine.
Dutch Foreign Minister Bert Koenders has summoned Russia's ambassador over "unacceptable" comments by Moscow criticising a report into the downing of flight MH17, officials said on Friday. "Responding to the presentation of the initial findings... spokespersons for the Kremlin and the Russian foreign ministry and defence ministry questioned the professionalism, integrity and independence of the Dutch public prosecution service," the Dutch foreign ministry said. "The Russian ambassador was informed that unsubstantiated criticism like this is unacceptable," the ministry said in a statement, issued in The Hague.
Lyle Denniston, Constitution Daily’s Supreme Court correspondent, breaks down the new cases accepted by the Court on Thursday, including four that involve constitutional questions. The Supreme Court, often interested these days in how far the First Amendment goes to protect freedom of expression, moved back into that area on Thursday as it selected new cases to be decided in the term that opens formally next Monday. Among eight new cases the Justices scheduled for review were four that involve constitutional questions, and two of those focus on the First Amendment. Beyond those four, another case involves an issue that is close to constitutional in nature – the sovereign status of America’s Indian tribes. And another turns on the duty of courts to use fair procedures – a guarantee similar to what the Constitution requires in criminal cases – when they impose money penalties on lawyers for professional misconduct.
“Hey I’m Prius Prime,” he said, “and my power is to transform into a Prius. The Prius Prime is pretty much a Prius that, via an electric plug, transforms into a slightly better Prius. Toyota officially launched the Prius Prime last week in California.
This time it’s an audio recording of the Democratic presidential candidate speaking to donors at a February fundraiser in northern Virginia, and the subject isn’t just the usual stuff of politics: It goes to the heart of American nuclear strategy. The recording that was passed to the right-leaning Washington Free Beacon website marks another alarming episode in a campaign season marked by a series of digital thefts that security experts believe have been carried out by Russian-backed hackers to disrupt the U.S. presidential election. The hack reinforces concerns that Russia is trying to influence and interfere in the U.S. election in favor of the Republican nominee, Donald Trump, who has praised Russian President Vladimir Putin and whose aides have long had friendly ties to Moscow and its allies.
A friend of Alexa Coria started the donation account after the woman’s boyfriend, Juan Canales-Hernandez, was arrested for allegedly killing baby RaeLynn Coria Martinez. Authorities said Canales-Hernandez, 24, struck the child with a chair after becoming “frustrated.” The baby died from her injuries two days after the attack earlier this month. The boyfriend was on probation for a previous child abuse conviction, according to the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office and is being held without bail on charges including first-degree murder, the Coloradoan reported.

If you're a Yahoo user, you already know that 500 million Yahoo accounts were compromised by malicious hackers, and that you should reset your Yahoo password. What Yahoo didn't tell you was that you may also need to unlink, and then relink, all the mobile devices that access your Yahoo account. As Dustin Childs and Simon Zuckerbraun of Trend Micro pointed out in a recent blog post, even if you've reset your regular password, malicious hackers may have already give their own mobile devices permanent access to your account.

The pontiff on Friday called for peaceful "coexistence" in the conflict-ridden ex-Soviet region at the start of the three-day tour that will also take him to Azerbaijan just months after he visited its arch-foe Armenia.

With countless software companies proclaiming they know how to build better cars, we were relieved to find Lexus has built an actual car rather than a “user experience,” which is what “UX” stands for in the tech community. Instead, the Lexus UX concept is our first good look at the luxury brand’s subcompact crossover that will join the growing fray of shrunken, premium SUVs that includes the BMW X1, Audi Q3, Mercedes-Benz GLA, and Infiniti QX30. Compared to the smallest Lexus crossover today, the NX, the UX is 9.1 inches stubbier, 5.0 inches lower, 1.2 inches wider, and sports a 0.8-inch tighter wheelbase.
The deal between Secretary of State Kris Kobach and the ACLU comes six weeks before the U.S. presidential election. The two sides have been at odds over a Kansas law requiring people to prove American citizenship if they want to register to vote while applying for a driver's license. The deal will allow people who registered at motor vehicle offices or with a federal form without providing citizenship documents to vote in the Nov. 8 election with a standard ballot, rather than be forced to use a provisional one, the ACLU and Kobach said in a status report filed on Thursday.
Turkey's main opposition party leader on Friday accused the government of seeking to capitalise on the July 15 coup to stifle dissent, and vowed to oppose moves to extend a three-month state of emergency. Tens of thousands accused of links to the group led by US-based Muslim preacher Fethullah Gulen, blamed by authorities for the attempted coup, have been detained or dismissed from their jobs in a relentless crackdown following the coup. The government has imposed a three-month state of emergency after the botched coup, and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has suggested there might be a need to extend the measure even up to a year.
Shimon Peres was being laid to rest on Friday in a ceremony attended by thousands of admirers and dozens of international dignitaries — in a final tribute to a man who personified the history of Israel during a remarkable seven-decade political career and who came to be seen by many as a visionary and symbol of hopes of Mideast peace. U.S. President Barack Obama, former U.S. President Bill Clinton and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas headlined a long list of world leaders who converged on Israel’s national cemetery, Mount Herzl, for the event. In a nod to the Palestinian leader, Abbas sat in the front row at the memorial service.

Dutch-led criminal investigators said Wednesday they have solid evidence that a Malaysian jet was shot down by a Buk missile moved into eastern Ukraine from Russia. Wilbert Paulissen, head of the Central Crime Investigation department of the Dutch National Police, said communications intercepts showed that pro-Moscow rebels had called for deployment of the mobile surface-to-air weapon, and reported its arrival in rebel-controlled areas of eastern Ukraine. From that and other evidence collected by the Joint Investigation Team, "it may be concluded MH17 was shot down by a 9M38 missile launched by a Buk, brought in from the territory of the Russian Federation, and that after launch was subsequently returned to the Russian Federation," Paulissen told a news conference.

Why yes, yes there are, and the world will get its first official look at them next Tuesday when Google hosts a press conference to introduce the Pixel and Pixel XL flagship phones. Of course, we don't have to wait for anything official to take a peak at what Google has in store. Whereas Nexus phones focused on value, offering solid specs at low price points, the new Pixel and Pixel XL will reportedly both be premium flagship phones with high-end specs and much higher price points than Google fans are used to.
US health authorities on Friday extended to six months a warning to men about the risky time period for sexually spreading Zika virus, which often carries no symptoms but can cause devastating birth defects. Men who live in or have traveled to an area of active Zika transmission are now urged to wait half a year before attempting conception, regardless of whether they have been diagnosed with Zika or showed any symptoms, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. "Based on new though limited data, CDC now recommends that all men with possible Zika virus exposure who are considering attempting conception with their partner, regardless of symptom status, wait to conceive until at least six months after symptom onset (if symptomatic) or last possible Zika virus exposure (if asymptomatic)," it said in a statement.
