9-year-old girl sledding in front yard killed by passing truck

A 9-year-old Virginia girl was struck and killed by a pickup truck while playing in the snow outside of a Chesterfield home on Thursday, according to local media.

The child was sledding down a driveway at around 2:00 p.m. when she slid into the path of a Toyota Tacoma, WWBT reports.

She was taken to a nearby hospital where she later died from her injuries.

William Barnett, a neighbor who witnessed the accident unfold, told WWBT that the girl and her family were in town from Florida to visit her grandparents. The girl's father was apparently outside with her at the time she was hit.

"Her father [was] laying on top of her, covering her with a blanket,” said Barnett.

Barnett also told the outlet that the driver of the Tacoma, who reportedly lived in the same neighborhood, appeared to be extremely distraught following the accident.

"Someone else came in and ended up driving the truck home, because he was in no condition to drive the truck," Barnett said. "He said he couldn’t drive. He was very shaken up."

No charges have yet been filed in the tragic case.
