9 hurt after driver suffers medical event, smashes through wall of Sioux Falls Starbucks

Mar. 6—SIOUX FALLS — Nine individuals were injured in Sioux Falls on Saturday after a driver suffered a medical event and drove through the wall of a Starbucks.

Shortly after 12:30 p.m. Saturday, emergency crews in Sioux Falls responded to Starbucks Coffee Shop at 418 S Minnesota Ave for a motor vehicle crash.

Upon arrival it was discovered that a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee had been northbound on Minnesota Ave when it left the roadway and collided with the southwest corner of the business.

The vehicle was completely embedded in the business while several employees and patrons were also inside.

During the course of the investigation, first responders established that a medical event likely contributed to the crash. Drugs and alcohol did not appear to be factors, and seatbelts had been in use by the occupants of the motor vehicle.

The vehicle's occupants — a 65-year-old male driver and a 71-year-old female passenger — and three other adults were transported to a Sioux Falls hospital for non-life threatening injuries. Three additional patrons and one employee sought care at a hospital on their own accord.

Traffic on Minnesota Avenue was diverted during the incident and officers of the Sioux Falls Police Department's traffic division responded to conduct the investigation.

Criminal charges have not been filed at this time, pending the completion of the investigation.
